Ranges Chess Club
Terms of service
Last updated 1 November 2026
These terms cover membership of Ranges Chess Club Inc. and use of this website. Paying a membership fee means you have read and accepted them.
1. Membership
Membership is paid in one of three tiers: Junior for under 18s, Senior for 18 and over, and Family. Fees may be paid yearly or monthly. Monthly memberships are paid by card and can be cancelled at any time.
Membership itself is granted by the committee. Under the club’s registered rules a person becomes a member only once the committee approves their application and the fee is paid, so paying online starts the process rather than finishing it. In applying, a person states that they support the purposes of the club and agree to comply with its rules.
Members under 15 are associate members under those rules. They take part in everything the club does, but they do not vote at general meetings.
2. Club nights
The club meets on Tuesdays during the Victorian school term, 6:30pm to 9:30pm, at Belgrave Library, Reynolds Lane, Belgrave VIC 3160. Confirmed dates are published on the club calendar. Nights do not run when the library is closed or the Tuesday is a public holiday.
3. Children at the club
The club does not supervise children. Ranges Chess Club is a chess club, not a childcare service, and it meets in a public library it does not control.
A parent or guardian remains responsible for their child for the whole time that child is at the club. Put plainly: your child is your responsibility, start to finish.
- A member under 18 may not be left at the club unattended.
- A parent or guardian must stay on site, or expressly designate another adult who will.
- That adult must be named to a committee member before the parent leaves.
- Children are to be collected by 9:30pm, when the night ends.
- The club must be able to reach a parent or guardian at any time during the night.
Long-standing families may have informal arrangements with the committee. Those do not replace the rule above; they are exceptions the committee agrees one at a time.
4. Behaviour
Everyone at the club treats other players, visitors and library staff with courtesy. We ask members to play fairly and accept results without argument, keep noise reasonable in a shared building, follow any direction from library staff, and leave the room as they found it.
The committee may ask anyone whose behaviour is unsafe or persistently disruptive to leave for the night, and may end a membership for serious or repeated conduct.
5. Working With Children
Committee members who deal with junior players hold a current Working With Children check or an equivalent professional registration, and the club records the number and expiry date. This does not make the club responsible for supervising children. Clause 3 still applies.
6. Your details
We keep your contact details, emergency contact and payment history so that we can run the club and reach people. What we hold, who processes it and how to change or remove it are set out in our privacy policy.
We do not photograph or film club nights for the website or social media. If that ever changes, we will ask members for consent first, and ask a parent or guardian separately for anyone under 18.
7. Fees, refunds and cancellation
Fees already paid are not generally refunded. A monthly membership can be cancelled at any time and ends with the month already paid for. Card payments are handled by Stripe; the club never sees or stores card numbers.
8. Changes to these terms
The committee may change these terms. Members will be emailed when a change is material, and the current version always lives at this address.
9. Acknowledgement
Paying a membership fee means the member, and for a junior the parent or guardian paying, has read and accepted these terms, supports the purposes of the club and agrees to comply with the club’s registered rules. Where these terms and the registered rules differ, the registered rules apply.
