Belgrave Library · Tuesday nights

Chess, with more laughing.

A social chess club for curious kids, rusty adults, seasoned players and anyone who likes their games with a few surprises.

No RSVP. No pressure. We’ll find you a game.

Your first night

This way. The room with the laughing.

Walk in, say hello and take a look around. You can watch a game, have a chat or sit straight down at a board. Someone will help you find the right opponent.

  • Come as you are
  • Bring curiosity
  • Expect chess, chatter and the odd surprise
A fairly typical Tuesday

Come for one game. Stay for the rematch.

There’s no set program and no need to perform. Club nights find their own rhythm — usually somewhere between a thoughtful game and a very good conversation.

Find a board

New here? We’ll introduce you and find a friendly match. Play quickly, think for ages or watch for a while first.

Try something odd

A normal game can become bughouse, a strange variant or a spontaneous challenge with surprisingly little warning.

Talk it through

Games often finish with both players leaning over the board, laughing at what they missed and finding a better move together.

Things get weird

The board is more of a suggestion.

standard chess also available

We play plenty of familiar chess. We also play bughouse, team games, unusual formats and boards with suspicious numbers of sides. Curiosity counts for more than knowing the rules in advance.

Learn out loud.

Nobody has to pretend they understood why their queen disappeared. Ask questions, replay the moment and find the better move together. Learning here is practical, generous and usually accompanied by a laugh.

  • Learn how the pieces move from a patient human.
  • Get friendly help with tactics, openings and endgames.
  • Bring a game or puzzle you cannot stop thinking about.
  • Stronger players are always learning too.

Magnus wants you to learn chess

A playful nudge, not an endorsement — Magnus is not affiliated with Ranges Chess Club. But he does make a compelling point.

A little focus, now and then

Occasionally, we get organised.

There are friendly competitions and properly focused games for people who want them. The clocks come out, the room gets quieter, and then everyone goes back to analysing the wild bits together.

Your chair is probably already pulled out.

Try a club night before deciding anything. Arrive when you can, stay for one game or the whole evening, and see whether Ranges feels like your kind of place.

Is chess on this Tuesday?

The next club nights, without the guesswork.

One schedule combines the club’s Google Calendar with the Victorian school terms and public holidays. If a club night falls in the school holidays or on a Tuesday public holiday, that date appears here as a night off.
